What is a mezuzah with a scroll? What is the difference between a mezuzah scroll and a mezuzah case?

מזוזה מורכבת מקלף מזוזה + בית מזוזה. מה כתוב במזוזה? כלומר מה כתוב בקלף המזוזה? עיקר המזוזה היא יריעת קלף העשויה מעור בהמה טהורה שנכתב עליה על ידי סופר סת”ם (ראשי תיבות: ספרי תורה, תפילין, מזוזות) בכתב מיוחד הנקרא כתב סת”ם 2 פרשיות – “שמע ישראל” ו”והיה אם שמוע”, ואת קלף המזוזה הזה מגלגלים מהסוף להתחלה ומכניסים אותו אל קופסה מוארכת הנקראת בית מזוזה.

מזוזה עם קלף איפוא, הכוונה בית מזוזה שיש בתוכו קלף מזוזה. בית מזוזה הוא למעשה לא עיקר המזוזה אלא הוא שומר על המזוזה, הוא “הבית” שלה, הוא מיכל שמכיל את עיקר המזוזה שהוא קלף מזוזה שכתוב בו את 2 הפרשיות “שמע ישראל” ו”והיה אם שמוע” וכנ”ל.

וגדולה ועצומה מצוות מזוזה עם קלף, בכל יום בקריאת שמע שחרית וערבית כבר אלפי שנים יהודים בכל העולם מזכירים את מצות מזוזה באומרם “וכתבתם על מזוזות ביתך ובשעריך”.

ומסופר במדרש (בראשית רבה, ל”ה) על המלך ארטבן ששלח לרבי יהודה הנשיא מתנה, מרגלית יקרה בעלת ערך רב ביותר, והוא ביקש ממנו “שלח לי בחזרה מתנה טובה, ששווה בערכה למתנה זו ששלחתי לך”. שלח לו רבי יהודה הנשיא כתמורה – מזוזה. כשהמלך ארטבן ראה את המזוזה שרבי יהודה שלח לו, הוא שיגר לו הודעה: “אני שלחתי לך מתנה שאין לה כלל הערכה כספית, ואתה שולח לי מתנה שניתן לרכוש אותה במטבעות בודדות? השיב לו רבי יהודה: לעומת התורה ומצוותיה – חפצי וחפציך לא ישוו בה, ואתה שלחת לי מתנה שאני צריך לשמור עליה, ולעומת זאת אני שלחתי לך מתנה שאתה יכול לשכב לישון – והיא תשמור עליך.

ובספר ‘שאילתות’ של רב אחאי גאון מובא המשך לסיפור זה, שנכנסה שדה לביתו של המלך ארטבן וקבעה את משכנה בגופה של בתו היחידה. המלך הזעיק את טובי הרופאים – ולא היה בידם להועיל לה. “כיון שנטל ארטבן את המזוזה ושם לה על הפתח – מיד ברחה אותה שדה”

ומובא בתיקוני זוהר (תיקונא עשיראה דף כה.) “דא רזא דמזוזה (זה סוד המזוזה) דאתמר בה (שנאמר בה) “וכתבתם על מזוזות ביתך” – מזוזת כתיב – זז מות”, עד כאן לשון הזוהר. כלומר יש ביכולתה של מצות מזוזה להזיז את המוות.והמרדכי כתב בשם מהר”ם: “ומובטח אני שכל בית שמתוקן במזוזה כהלכתה אין שום מזיק יכול לשלוט בו”הכסף משנה כותב “כאשר המזוזה כתובה כתקנתה חופפת שמירת ה’ יתברך על הבית”.

And it is important to know: All the protective merits of the mezuzah exist only when the mezuzah is kosher according to halacha. Therefore, one should buy the mezuzah from a reliable store whose owner is known to be God-fearing. And one should keep in mind – the mezuzah contains 713 letters, and for each letter there are several ways it can be invalidated. If there is, heaven forbid, any flaw in any one of the 713 letters, the mezuzah is considered invalid by law.

In any case, the intention of the person placing it should not be for protection or to receive reward in the world to come, but solely to fulfill the commandment of the Creator, may He be blessed (Yalkut Yosef, Chuppah and Kiddushin, p. 929).

And how much does a mezuzah with a scroll cost? The price of mezuzahs with a scroll is influenced by several parameters:

The scroll – The quality and size of the mezuzah scroll affect the price of the mezuzah scroll. Of course, the mezuzah scroll must have a certification verifying that it is halachically kosher.The scribe – The experience of the scribe who writes the mezuzah scroll and the quality and beauty of his writing affect the price of the mezuzah. Of course, the scribe must be certified with an official certificate.Type of script – There are 3 common types of script in mezuzahs – Sephardic, Ashkenazi, and Arizal script. The Sephardic script is less complex to write and is usually cheaper.Size of the mezuzah – The size of the mezuzah scroll is usually between 8 cm and 15 cm. There are also mezuzahs of 20 and even 30 cm, but these sizes are not standard or common. The price of the mezuzah is naturally influenced by the size of the scroll. A larger mezuzah scroll costs more than a smaller one.Quantity of mezuzahs – Mezuzah price varies when purchasing quantities, as with any product eligible for a discount when bought in bulk.Proofreadings – A mezuzah usually undergoes manual and human proofreading by a certified proofreader, and some kashrut supervisors also perform proofreading using computer software; a mezuzah that has undergone two rounds of proofreading is more expensive.

So, practically speaking – how much does a mezuzah with a klaf cost?

The price of a mezuzah parchment (klaf) usually ranges between 150 NIS and 350 NIS. There are scribes whose mezuzah parchment prices are 500 NIS or more. In any case – if you find a mezuzah price that is too cheap – carefully check if there is the kashrut certification of a rabbi or authorized body, and whether the mezuzah parchment has undergone professional proofreading according to halacha, because for the mezuzah to be kosher it must be written according to halacha passed down for generations without any changes, and even a small deviation from halacha renders the mezuzah completely invalid!

All the above refers to the price of the mezuzah parchment. Regarding the price of the mezuzah case – prices range from a few shekels to several tens of shekels, and can naturally also reach hundreds of shekels or more, depending on the material used and its quality, and the design level of the mezuzah case. So effectively, the price of a mezuzah with parchment consists of the price of the parchment + the price of the mezuzah case.
